The owner-managed winery Reh Kendermann is one of the largest wineries in Germany. It was created in 1999 from the merger of the Carl Reh, Leiwen , (founded 1920) and Hermann Kendermann, Bingen wineries . The headquarters of Reh Kendermann GmbH with management, sales, marketing, administration, winery, bottling and wine storage is in Bingen am Rhein. Further locations can be found in Leiwen, Gau-Bickelheim and Böchingen . Reh Kendermann purchases grapes and must from contract winemakers in the Palatinate and Rheinhessen growing regions . The family business owns its own vineyards on the Moselle , in the south-west of Romania near Oprisor (Carl Reh Winery) and in Wellington, South Africa (Napier Vineyards). Today Reh Kendermann exports wine to 39 countries worldwide, making it one of Germany's leading wine exporters. Reh Kendermann was the first winery to introduce the cold fermentation process that is widespread today.

history

In 1920 Carl Reh (* 1898, † 1962) founded a trading company for grapes, must and wine in Leiwen on the Moselle. There he built the first larger winery with office and residential buildings seven years later - Carl Reh GmbH & Co. KG. Due to increased space requirements, he rented further wineries in the following years. In 1936, Carl Reh was the first winemaker on the Moselle to store his wines in tasteless containers lined with glass tiles and to buy quality vineyards from the Moselle.

In 1949 the winery received a state honor award from Peter Altmeier , Minister for Agriculture, Viticulture and Forestry, for its special achievements in viticulture in Rhineland-Palatinate . Son Günther Reh shared the management of the company with his father at the age of 21. By 1956, one of the most modern wineries in Europe with a fully automatic filling system was built .

Company founder Carl Reh died in 1962 at the age of 64 and his son Günther Reh took over the sole management . In 1987 the next generation in the person of Carl Reh Junior, grandson of the company founder, replaced him in the management. The winery is still owned by the family of Andrea and Carl Reh to this day.

In 1992 the Carl Reh GmbH & Co. KG winery took over Hermann Kendermann GmbH from Bingen am Rhein. Seven years later, the two wineries were merged to form Reh Kendermann GmbH Weinkellerei. Since then, the company's headquarters with administration, management, sales, marketing, winery, bottling, domestic wine storage and export has been in Bingen. In 1995, Reh Kendermann was the first winery to introduce cold fermentation, a temperature-controlled fermentation process.

In the south-west of Romania, in the Kleine Wallachai, Carl Reh acquired around 350 hectares of vineyards in 2001 and founded the Carl Reh Winery in Oprisor, Romania. Of the 350 hectares of vineyards, there are now 252 hectares in yield.

In 2002, the company also bought top vineyards for Riesling in Leiwen and Trittenheim on the Moselle in its home country.

In 2008, Reh Kendermann acquired a high-level tank cellar in Böchingen / Pfalz, which enabled the tank capacity to be expanded by 15 million to a total of around 45 million liters. In July of the same year, Reh Kendermann took over the Novini wine cellar, formerly the central cellar of Rhenish wine cooperatives, in Gau-Bickelheim.

In 2009 Carl Reh received the award "National Wine Entrepreneur of the Year" from Meininger Verlag .

In 2015, Alexander Rittlinger, previously Head of Marketing and Sales Germany, joined the management team alongside Carl Reh. In the same year, in October 2015, Reh Kendermann GmbH Weinkellerei acquired a stake in Yapp Brothers Limited, a leading importer of French wines in England, thereby expanding its business areas in England .

In 2016, Reh Kendermann celebrated 50 years of Black Tower. The brand continues to be the most successful German wine brand with around 14 million bottles sold worldwide.

In order to further expand its competence in overseas wines, Reh Kendermann GmbH invested in South Africa on April 1, 2017 and acquired the Napier Winery in Wellington. Under the name Napier Vineyards, the previous winemaker Leon Bester continues to be responsible for the cultivation and expansion of the wines on site. Distribution and marketing are carried out from Bingen.
