Jewish cemetery (Niederleuken)
The Niederleuken Jewish Cemetery is a cemetery in Niederleuken , a district of Saarburg . It was used until 1936.
history
The cemetery was first mentioned in a document in 1804. However, references to the cemetery can already be found in the 18th century. With 2,049 m² it is the second largest Jewish cemetery in the Trier-Saarburg district . It served as a burial place for the Jewish residents of Ayl , Beurig , Saarburg , Wawern and Wiltingen . The cemetery was expanded twice. Once during the 19th century and a second time in 1907. The last burial took place in 1936. The cemetery was desecrated for the first time in 1928 . Further desecrations followed after 1933 and especially during the November pogroms in 1938 . In 1942 the area was sold to a private individual by the Reich Association of Jews in Germany . A total of 12 tombstones are still preserved today. The cemetery stands as cultural monument under monument protection .
