Jewish cemetery (Hermeskeil)
The Jewish cemetery Hermeskeil is a cemetery in the town of Hermeskeil in the Trier-Saarburg district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It stands as a cultural monument under monument protection .
The Jewish cemetery is in the immediate vicinity of the Christian (Protestant) cemetery on Züscher Straße / Straße Zum Ringgraben .
There are no more gravestones in the cemetery, which was laid out in 1880 and occupied until the beginning of the 20th century . It was devastated in 1938. A memorial stone commemorates the dead of the Hermeskeil Jewish community buried here.
history
During the Second World War , the dead from the SS special camp in Hinzert were buried in the destroyed cemetery . They were exhumed in March 1946 and buried in the Hinzert memorial . The cemetery in Hermeskeil was - as far as possible - restored.
Desecrations of the cemetery
- The cemetery was severely desecrated for the first time in the summer of 1929 . Two tombstones were knocked over and "soiled in the meanest way", that is, probably smeared with Nazi slogans or symbols.
- In September 1929 all the tombstones were overturned and destroyed.
