Christoph March (born April 13, 1867 in Schweich on the Middle Moselle ; † October 15, 1931 in Prüm ) was a Roman Catholic pastor in Eschfeld and a church painter from 1899 to 1931 .

Life

As the eldest son of Johann and Maria März, born Schue, he grew up with his siblings Katharina, Elisabeth, Maria, Johann and Matthias.

After elementary school he attended grammar school and studied theology at the seminary in Trier. He was ordained a priest in 1895 . In Püttlingen / Saar then he spent four years as a chaplain before he arrived in 1899 as pastor to Esch field at Prüm. He worked here until 1931.

As a painter pastor from Eschfeld, he was known far beyond the borders of the Eifel for his church paintings. March painted u. a. the parish church and the rectory of Eschfeld and the chapel in Wawern (Eifel) . His painting of the church in (Neunkirchen-) Wiebelskirchen / Saar has been well restored . He is also called Eschfeld painter pastor . Even if he had not received any academic (art) training and his painting should rather be considered popular, he was in contact with well-known artists (such as Ewald Mataré ) who described him as original and sincere in his art.

He also wrote and composed songs, motets and masses, including the Eschfeld Mass in E flat major for mixed a cappella choir .

After a tragic accident while painting at the rectory in Eschfeld, he died on October 15, 1931 in the Prüm hospital.
