Treading water describes a hydrotherapy treatment method that is used in Kneipp facilities based on Sebastian Kneipp and is therefore also called Kneipp therapy .

application

This involves walking on the spot in cold (tap-cold) water . (Note: It is recommended to only tread water if the feet are warm to the touch at the beginning of the water treading.) One leg should always be pulled completely out of the water and the tip of the foot should be bent down slightly (the so-called stork walk). After about 30 seconds you will feel a strong feeling of cold in your feet and lower legs . Then you should briefly leave the cold water to warm your feet again. Repeat this process several times. After treading water, just wipe off the water (do not dry it off) and make a little movement to warm it up.

You can tread water in a bathtub or shower tray , in cool streams , on shallow lake or river banks or in "mud mud pools" prepared for treading water (if the water is sufficiently cool in spring, in cool summers or in autumn).

Kneipp facilities

In numerous places - especially in spas that are committed to Kneipp medicine - so-called Kneipp facilities in the form of water treading basins , e.g. B. in spa parks , has been set up. The Kneipp-Bund is different besides the Wassertretstellen also Armbecken as another form of Kneipp facilities.

effect

Treading water is supposed to stimulate the circulation and promote arterial blood flow . The cold stimulus causes the superficial blood vessels to contract. Together with the muscle movement, this should also stimulate the venous blood flow and prevent varicose veins . Treading water should be done in the evening to help you fall asleep better. However, there is no scientific evidence for these effects.

application areas

Treading water is used in the treatment of varicose veins and migraines . It should also strengthen the immune system.

Alternatives

Alternatives to treading water are treading dew on meadows or walking in snow in soft powder snow. Walking barefoot on different surfaces strengthens the muscles and strengthens well-being.
