wine growing
The Roman Wine Route is located in the Moselle wine-growing region , which is considered the oldest German wine region. Archaeological finds show that the Romans already cultivated vines here in the 1st century AD. After the end of Roman times, the monasteries took on a central role in viticulture.
Today Riesling , a white grape variety, is grown on three quarters of the area . Other important grape varieties are Müller-Thurgau and the red varieties Pinot Noir and Dornfelder .
