investment

The building (28 by 23 meters) erected in the first half of the 2nd century AD initially corresponded in its basic form to the widespread Gallo-Roman villa type "Bollendorf": a hall with two corner projections and an intervening columned hall ( portico ). In the course of the 3rd and 4th centuries AD, the villa underwent numerous additions and conversions, so that at the end of its construction period, with a floor area of 48 by 29 meters and 34 rooms, it became one of the larger mansions in the entire area around Trier ( Augusta Treverorum ) belonged.

Remains of a multi-colored floor mosaic and wall cladding made of black marble still testify to the splendid furnishings of the rooms . This and some valuable small finds indicate the high social status of the villa owner.

The site of the villa was known as early as the 19th century. Between 1983 and 1987 the manor house was uncovered, preserved and partially reconstructed. Today you can see the main front with the corner projections and the portico, a heated living room with mosaic and parts of the bathing wing.

The Roman Villa Rustica is integrated into the virtual network of Roman roads, the Roads of the Romans , which opens up an ancient cultural region in a modern way and makes around 100 Roman sights tangible.
