Heinz Cüppers

Heinz Cüppers (born August 6, 1929 in Trier ; † February 14, 2005 ibid) was a German archaeologist who, as director of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier, worked primarily in the provincial Roman archeology . Examples include his research on the Roman bridges or the thermal baths in Trier ( Augusta Treverorum ).

Cüppers studied Classical Archeology, Ancient History and Classical Philology at the University of Bonn , where he received his doctorate in 1956. After receiving a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute in 1957/58, he became head of the Aachen branch of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn in 1959. Since 1962 he has been involved in the reorganization of the collections and excavations in Trier at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier. In 1977 he became its director and took over the position of director of the Archaeological Monument Preservation of the Trier Office at the State Office for Monument Preservation Rhineland-Palatinate . In 1994 he retired.

From September 1965 to November 1965, Cüppers and the Old Testament scholar Herbert Donner carried out the urgently needed work to restore and preserve the remaining parts of the mosaic map of Madaba .

The Dr. Heinz Cüppers Prize of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier was announced in his honor in 2005 and was awarded for the first time in 2006.
