The Grutenhäuschen

The Grutenhäuschen is a partially reconstructed Roman grave temple, which is located in a vineyard slope near the community of Igel on the Moselle . It was restored on the remains of the original burial chamber in 1962 by the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier . In 2001 the upper and front parts of the original temple were reconstructed.

history

The two-story grave temple was built in the 3rd / 4th Erected in the 18th century after Augusta Treverorum (Trier) became the imperial residence. The Roman road to Trier ran along the Moselle beneath the Grutenhäuschen (Grut = grotto). The remains of a Roman building have been discovered nearby, indicating the home of the builders. The basement consists of a vaulted room in which the stone coffins of the deceased were kept. After the cremation of the dead with subsequent urn burial had been the norm up to now, in the second half of the 3rd century body burial became fashionable among Christians and non-Christians. An example of the urn burials carried out so far is the Igel column , which is not far from the Grutenhäuschen in Igel. Above the burial chamber there is an almost square room that was used as a meeting place for commemorating the dead. From the Roman poet Ausonius it has been handed down that the course of the Moselle was lined with magnificent villas, which were undoubtedly equipped with other burial sites.

Today the Grutenhäuschen is used for parties and civil weddings.

The Grutenhäuschen is a protected cultural monument according to the Monument Protection Act (DSchG) and entered in the list of monuments of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate . It is located in the district west of the village in the vineyard slope .
