Life

Raymonde Vincent was born into a farming family in Berry . Her father was a tenant. Her mother passed away when she was four years old and had to run the household. She did not attend school, but taught herself to read using the catechism and the local newspaper. One brother died as a soldier in World War I. In 1925, Vincent went to Paris at the age of 17. Among other odd jobs, she posed as a model for Christian Caillard, Georges Klein and Alberto Giacometti . During these years she became interested in painting, music, theater and above all literature. In 1926 she met the literary critic Albert Béguin , whom she married in 1929. He introduced her to the literary circles of the Montparnasse district , where she met Louis Aragon , Georges Bernanos and Jean Giraudoux . Béguin made her work as a writer. In 1937 she received the Prix Femina for her first novel Campagne , in which she tells of her tough childhood on the farm . She spent a few years with her husband in Germany and described her experiences with the emerging National Socialism in the book Seigneur retirez-moi d'entre les morts . After separating from Béguin, she moved back to central France in 1941. In 1957 she moved to Saint-Chartier, where she stayed until her death.

Vincent remained a staunch Catholic throughout her life, despite his anti-clerical attitude. Her unusual way of life from the farmer's daughter without school entrance to the celebrated writer and intellectual explains her independent, courageous and committed attitude to social issues.
