Jean-Marie Pesez (* 1929 ; † 1998 ) was a French archaeologist and historian . His interest was in the rural population in the Middle Ages. In France he is considered to be a pioneer of a renewal of archeology of the Middle Ages in the 1960s and 1970s, which also includes neighboring disciplines and is close to the Annales School .

In 1958 he received his agrégation as a historian, was Directeur d´etudes at the École pratique des hautes études and from 1965 at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales , where in 1965 he founded the Groupe d'archéologie médiévale (GAM).

In collaboration with Polish scientists, he examined archaeologically abandoned villages in Europe and excavated in France (including the village of Dracy, Département Côte-d'Or ) as well as in Sicily and Greece.

Other pioneers in his field in France were Michel de Boüard (1909–1989), the founder of the Center de recherches archéologiques médiévales in Caen , and the student of Georges Duby Gabrielle Démians d'Archimbaud , who lived in Aix- en-France in the 1960s. Provence founded the Laboratoire d'archéologie médiévale .
