history

The Rottenburg State Prison (1904)

The Rottenburg correctional facility is one of the oldest in Baden-Württemberg. At the time of the Romans, the capitol of the city of Sumelocenna was located on the current site of the prison . A castle was built there in the 13th century, which a little later gave way to an entire palace complex. In 1809 the State of Württemberg built a facility for forced laborers on the site, which finally became the Rottenburg State Prison in 1824. In 1841 today's administration building, which also houses the cells, was completed.

Agricultural work has been carried out in the Rottenburg prison since 1879. From 1884 the institution was expanded and supplemented, last in 1975 the detention house 3 was added in prefabricated construction , which now houses the so-called residential group execution. Today the prison consists of approx. 20 buildings, which show the most diverse architectural styles of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Only men are accommodated in Rottenburg. As a rule, offenders who have to serve a longer term of imprisonment are accommodated here. Branch offices

In addition to the head office in Rottenburg am Neckar, which accommodate 563 inmates in closed prisons and 38 day release provides the JVA Rottenburg has two branch offices. The first is in the district town of Tübingen . It offers space for 48 prisoners in the closed prison, most of whom are in civil  or pre-trial detention . The second branch is located in Hohenstein in the Maßhalderbuch state domain. This institution offers space for 43 prisoners in an open prison and specializes in cattle husbandry as well as potato and grain cultivation according to biological principles.
