The courtyard walk is the opportunity for prisoners in a prison to spend part of their free time together with other prisoners for a specified time in a designated place in the fresh air. That is why the time spent in the yard is often called the free period , in Germany the specially designed area is called the free period .

Legal regulation in Germany

Walking in the yard is regulated in Section 64 of the Prison Act and is referred to as being outdoors . Courtyard times of between one and two hours are usual in penal institutions . Depending on the structural and spatial requirements, there may be the opportunity to exercise during the courtyard: basketball , volleyball , handball , badminton, etc. Ä. Alongside work, going to the yard is one of the few opportunities for prisoners to meet fellow prisoners from other departments and is therefore very important in their daily routine. It is not possible to restrict your stay outdoors as part of a disciplinary measure.
