Bell tower of the Melanchthon Church

The Melanchthon Church is a Protestant church in the Mannheim district of Neckarstadt-Ost . It was built between 1922 and 1923 according to plans by Wilhelm Würth . The bell tower dates from 1997.

history

Residential development in the Neckarstadt north of Mannheim city center began to emerge in the second half of the 19th century. In the western part, the Luther Church was built for the Protestant residents in 1884. Due to the rapid population growth, it was replaced by a larger new building after just twenty years. Even after that, the population continued to rise rapidly, in 1910 there were already 20,259 Evangelicals, and residential development continued to develop eastwards, so that in 1913 the parish named after the reformer Philipp Melanchthon was established here.

Due to the First World War , a church was initially not built and services were held in the Uhland School. The Melanchthon Church was then built between 1922 and 1923. Although planned as an emergency church , after the construction of a larger church, the building was to be used as a parish hall, it had 900 seats. The church was badly damaged during World War II . By 1952, the Melanchthon Church was rebuilt with a newly designed interior under the direction of Albrecht Lange and Hans Mitzlaff . In the last third of the 20th century, the number of church members in the Neckarstadt fell sharply. In 2009 a group pastoral office was set up for the communities of Melanchthon, Luther , Kreuz and Herzogenried.

description

Melanchthon Church

The Melanchthon Church is on Langen Rötterstrasse in the center of Neckarstadt-Ost. The hall church is covered by a hipped roof, which is decorated with a ridge turret. There are twelve elongated windows on the sides. They were designed by Johannes Schreiter in 1990/91 and refer to the church year . The altar mural “the crucified is the risen one”, the baptismal font and the christening chandelier were created in 1986 by Hannelore Pichlbaur . The altar and the pulpit are by Gernot Eichler . The organ has 20 registers and was built in 1985 by Georges Heintz .

When the church was built in 1923, two bells were hung in the roof turret. One of them was the oldest surviving bell in Mannheim. It was cast by Melchior Derck in 1709 and donated by officers for the Trinity Church . After a new bell was hung there and the old bell did not match the sound, it came to the Melanchthon Church. It has the following inscription:

In Mannheim my picking and sounding did not echo in front of anyone
I am the first Lutheran Glock: I call them all
They are concerned with God's praise and praise and their own salvation:
And show in memory who gave birth to me

Martin Rudolf and Nicolaus Staniek designed the 33 meter high bell tower in 1997 . Three crossing steel tubes, which are supposed to symbolize the Trinity , carry the bell chamber made of aluminum and wood , in which four bells hang.

In 2012, the altar, pulpit and baptismal font from the demolished cruciform church were set up on the meadow of Melanchthon Church .
