The US Garrison Mannheim (Engl. Mannheim Garrison / US Army Garrison Mannheim ) was the administrative unit of the US Army in Mannheim until May 31, 2011 .

history

At the end of the Second World War , the US Army occupied Mannheim and soon took over the Wehrmacht barracks . Mannheim thus became one of 112 places in Germany in which the American armed forces were based. Over time, the barracks were expanded with the infrastructure that the soldiers and their families needed, such as living quarters, schools, churches, sports fields and shopping opportunities. In 1956 the Mannheim High School opened and later there was a location of the University of Maryland .

The garrison became part of Mannheim life, the German-American folk festival took place regularly or the Albert Schweitzer tournament, a high-level basketball tournament, was held. A major accident occurred in 1982 when, at the International Airship Days to mark the city's 375th anniversary, a US Army transport helicopter used to drop parachutists at Mannheim-Neuostheim Airport crashed and 46 people died. Most of them were young skydivers from Mannheim's twin cities, Toulon and Swansea

The Central Army Group (CENTAG), an important NATO headquarters, was based in Mannheim-Seckenheim from 1961 to 1980 . After German reunification and the end of the Cold War in Europe, the number of soldiers stationed in Mannheim decreased and the first areas in Mannheim were released. In 2010, that year around 8,000 Americans were still living and working in Mannheim, it was finally decided to leave the city completely; this was part of the restructuring of its armed forces in Europe called "Transformation" by the US Army. On May 31, 2011, the Mannheim garrison was dissolved. The last woman in command of the garrison was Lieutenant Colonel Elizabeth Ryan Griffin. The remaining US armed forces stationed in Mannheim were temporarily part of the US Army Garrison Baden-Württemberg, which was disbanded in September 2013. All soldiers and civilian employees were to be withdrawn from Mannheim by February 2015 and the barracks returned to the German authorities.

In Mannheim, an area was vacated by 2016, which at that time corresponded to around 3.5 percent of the entire municipal area of the city. In July 2010, the city of Mannheim set up a " conversion " office that coordinated the transition to civil use.
