history

In November 1871 an old Catholic association was founded in Mannheim, which constituted itself as a community in March 1874. The Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden left the castle church to her for the services. In 1935 the church council decided to build a second church in the north of Mannheim for the northern parts of the city and the surrounding area.

In June 1936 the foundation stone was laid on which the originally planned name “Church of the Resurrection” still stands. When it became known that the Protestant Resurrection Church was already being built in the neighboring Kuhbuckelsiedlung at the same time , the name “Church of the Redeemer” was chosen. After half a year of construction, the church was consecrated on January 3, 1937 by Bishop Erwin Kreuzer . In 1962 the interior was redesigned, in particular a new altar facing the community was acquired. Another redesign followed in 2002/03. In 2012 the church was given a striking blue paint.

description

The Church of the Redeemer is in the south of the garden city on Waldstrasse, a four-lane state road at the transition to the Waldhof district . The conveniently located property had been sold by the city. The church was simply designed in the style typical of the time. It is covered on the entrance side with a red gable roof and on the choir side with a hipped roof. The porch of the arched entrance portal repeats the exterior with light plaster and a small gable roof. The church tower attached to the southeast corner has a square floor plan and a pyramid roof .

The pews and platforms in the interior were removed during the redesign in 2003 and replaced with mobile seating. There is a representation of the Last Supper on the choir wall . The ringing originally consisted of three bells that had to be delivered during World War II . After the war, a bell could be brought back from Hamburg . In 2009 a second bronze bell was procured. It bears the inscription "Glory to God on high".
