Church of the Resurrection

The Church of the Resurrection is a Protestant church in the Käfertal district of Mannheim . It was built in 1936 according to plans by Christian Schrade .

history

From 1931 the Speckweg settlement was built between Käfertal, Waldhof and Gartenstadt, followed by the Kuhbuckelsiedlung to the north. In 1935 there were already between 3,000 and 4,000 Protestant residents here. In January 1936 it was decided to build a church and an architectural competition was announced. The winner was Christian Schrade, who had already been responsible for the Christ Church before the First World War . The foundation stone was laid in June and the Church of the Resurrection was inaugurated on December 13, 1936. At the same time, a parish was set up consisting of parts of the parishes Waldhof ( Pauluskirche ) and Käfertal ( Union church ).

description

View from the west

The Church of the Resurrection was built on the Kuhbuckel, one of the highest elevations in the Mannheim district. The architect designed a simple, unadorned building that is reminiscent of traditional village churches from the Middle Ages, in keeping with the location in a looser settlement. Shortly afterwards Christian Schrade realized a very similar church in Steinsfurt . The brightly plastered building has arched windows and is covered with a gable roof. On the west side, the roof is extended over the porch and is supported by three columns. The church tower is attached to the choir and has a height of 33 meters with its tapering roof.

The ringing consists of four bells that were inaugurated in 1956. The single-nave interior has a wooden beam ceiling. The pulpit adorned Karl Josef Fortwängler with four carved reliefs : Martin Luther , a mother and child, a schoolboy and an industrial worker. The organ came from Walcker in Ludwigsburg.
