The Marchivum , spelled MARCHIVUM , is the archive of the Baden-Württemberg city of Mannheim . Until March 2018 it was called the Mannheim City Archives - Institute for City History .

history

On April 1, 1907, the historian Friedrich Walter was appointed full-time head of the city archive and this was set up as an independent office. Friedrich Walter was the editor of the Mannheimer Geschichtsblätter and had written the first scientifically based city history on behalf of the city for the city's anniversary in 1907.

There were heavy losses in the Second World War, but the most important archival material could be saved, especially the council minutes of the city of Mannheim from 1661 and all registration forms and registration files since the introduction of mandatory registration in 1807. Subsequently, there was a systematic inventory of urban and non-urban documents and collections.

The city archive was given a new organizational structure in the 1960s with the two main departments “Intermediate Archive” and “Historical Archive”. It became a service provider and memory of its own administration.

In 2004 the city archives were given the name “Institute for City History”. On March 1, 2018, the name was changed to Marchivum .

tasks

In 1909 the Mannheim city council set the tasks: "The archive should serve the needs of the city administration, [...] but also scientific purposes and in general promote the maintenance and research of the local history."

Today the archive regulations of the city of Mannheim apply on the basis of the law on the maintenance and use of archive material (State Archives Act). The Marchivum is divided into the areas of archive with extensive collections and holdings, the service for research and communication and the exhibition areas on the history of the city and the Nazi era. A city history exhibition and a Nazi documentation center complement the previous seminars, lectures and guided tours, city history publications and the city archive's own research projects.

offer

The basis is formed by the archive with extensive collections and holdings, the service for research and communication and the exhibition areas on the city's history and the Nazi era. Archival material with a length of 13 running shelf kilometers was transferred to the ox pen bunker. The archive area is available to the public. Those interested can research topics relating to the history of the city or their own family history in the reading rooms. The Mannheim building files can also be viewed. The new Friedrich-Walter-Saal can also be used by third parties for lectures, conferences or workshops. The aim of the digitization center is to digitally secure and make available the entire historical legacy handed down in writing, images and sound. Parts have already been digitized and can be accessed via online research.

building

Collini Center, former headquarters

The city archives were located in City Hall N 1 and City Hall E 5 until it found its home in the office tower of the Collini Center . After the building was in great need of renovation, the Mannheim city council decided in 2014 to expand the ox pen bunker as a new location. Construction work began in February 2016. After construction was completed, the move took place in the winter of 2017/2018 with the opening in March 2018.
