Friedrich Walter (born September 3, 1870 in Mannheim , † November 4, 1956 in Heidelberg ) was a German historian . He was the first director of the Mannheim City Archives and director of the Mannheim Palace Museum .

Life

Walter studied classical philology and history in Heidelberg and Bonn . After completing his teaching degree and doctorate, he began his teaching internship in Mannheim, where he was also engaged in journalism and appeared as a theater critic. From 1896 to 1899 he arranged the archive of the National Theater on behalf of the city . In 1900 he was commissioned to organize the city archive and, with a view to the 300th anniversary celebrations, to work out a representative representation of Mannheim's city history, which occupied him for almost seven years. Mannheim in the past and present was until 2007 a standard work in the history of Mannheim.

He was always distant from the nationalistic and militaristic currents of his time, but in 1915 he was called up for military service. Even after the First World War , he campaigned for democracy and the liberal tradition in Mannheim. From 1921 to 1935 he was the first director of the Mannheim Palace Museum, which opened in 1926. Due to the emerging National Socialist sentiments and because of his Jewish wife, he lost all offices between 1933 and 1934 and was retired in 1935. After the Second World War, Lord Mayor Hermann Heimerich commissioned him to continue the history of Mannheim. He spent his retirement secluded in Heidelberg.

He was married to Alice, used. Darmstaedter, b. Leoni (1873-1956). Friedrich-Walter-Strasse in Mannheim-Feudenheim is named after him.
