Ulrich Niess
Ulrich Niess (born July 27, 1960 in Trier ) is a German historian and archivist .
Life
Ulrich Nieß graduated from Saarbrücken University in 1987 with the 1st state examination in history, mathematics and social studies. Funded by the German National Academic Foundation , he did his doctorate in 1990 under Reinhard Schneider on a topic on the history of the medieval German order. After working as a research assistant in Saarbrücken at the chairs of Jörg K. Hoensch and Reinhard Schneider, he completed a legal clerkship for the higher archives service in Karlsruhe, Marburg and Bonn from 1991 to 1993 and, after completing his training, moved to the Mannheim City Archives, where he was also the head of the interim archive EDP took over. At the end of 2000 he was appointed director of the Mannheim City Archives, succeeding Jörg Schadt , which was given the addition of City Archives Mannheim - Institute for City History in 2004 and renamed MARCHIVUM in March 2018 . In 2016 the University of Mannheim appointed him honorary professor.
Services
Under the direction of Ulrich Nieß, the Mannheim City Archive - ISG, together with its two sponsoring associations, the Mannheim Architecture and Building Archive and the Association of Friends of the City Archives - ISG, strengthened its publication and exhibition activities on topics about the history of the city of Mannheim and the neighboring region . He himself wrote numerous essays and articles on the history of Mannheim. Among the publications he edited, the three-volume history of the city of Mannheim, published between 2007 and 2009, and the six-volume work Mannheim and its buildings 1907–2007 stand out. In 2006 Nieß was appointed Chief City Archives Director and in 2011 City Director. He is u. a. Reviewer at the German Research Foundation, member of the Commission for Historical Regional Studies in Baden-Württemberg, on the board of the Association of German Archivists and at the Federal Conference of Local Archives in the German Association of Cities.
