Jörg Schadt

Jörg Schadt (born May 9, 1937 in Karlsruhe ) is a German historian and archivist . From 1975 to 2000 he was director of the Mannheim City Archives .

Schadt studied history, geography and English at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and in Sheffield . In 1966 he did his doctorate in Heidelberg under Werner Conze with a thesis on the "Social Democratic Party in Baden from the beginning to the turn of the century (1868-1900)". He entered the service of the city of Mannheim in 1964 in order to set up a documentation of the persecution of Jewish citizens in the city of Mannheim between 1933 and 1945. From 1965 he completed the archive traineeship in Marburg and Karlsruhe, and then returned to Mannheim to work at the city archive. In 1970 he was appointed City Archives Councilor, and a year later he was appointed City Archives Councilor. After the then head Johannes Bleich left , he was appointed his successor in 1975. He succeeded in significantly expanding the workforce at the city archive by, unlike his predecessor, devoting himself more to historical education and public relations. He has written numerous books on the history of southwest Germany and Mannheim or published them in the series of publications of the city archives that he founded. From 1986 he was second deputy chairman of the Southwest German Working Group for Urban History Research; In 1987 he was appointed chief city archives director. Among other things, he was appointed to the commission for historical regional studies in Baden-Württemberg . After his retirement he helped to professionalize the Schwetzingen city ​​archive .
