The University of Sheffield ( German University of Sheffield ) is a state university founded in 1905 in the English city of Sheffield with around 24,500 students and 1,200 academic employees.
The university is one of the world's most respected universities and is considered a top university both in specialist circles and in media coverage . history
The university's forerunners were the successively merged higher education institutions of Sheffield Medical School (founded in 1828), Firth College - a science school - (1879) and Sheffield Technical School (1884). At the turn of the century there were plans to merge these together with the educational institutions in Leeds , Liverpool and Manchester , which were established at the same time, in a supra-regional university, but the establishment of the independent University of Leeds in 1904 made this obsolete. The colleges in Sheffield finally received the Royal Charter by King Edward VII in 1905 to educate the University of Sheffield with only 114 students at the time.
Since its inception, the University of Sheffield has been one of the civil universities in England, which is also reflected in the courses offered. It is also a major research university. The University of Sheffield receives extensive research contracts from industry, including Boeing , Rolls-Royce , Unilever and GlaxoSmithKline . The university has a very high reputation among employees and is one of the higher education institutions at which leading employers such as Goldman Sachs , PricewaterhouseCoopers or Google recruit.
Admission to Studies
The entry requirements are among the highest in the country. In 2012, for example, the psychologists at the medical faculty received an average of 23 potential applicants for one place.

The university achieved particularly good placements in the departments of philosophy (6th place among English universities), chemistry (6th place) and biology (5th place). The field of political science (3rd place), which was the only course to overtake the renowned University of Cambridge in the 2010 ranking , is particularly respected internationally . The University was awarded the Queen's Anniversary Prize in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2007 for exceptional merits in research and teaching. In the teaching quality assessment, the university took third place. Around 75% of all departments received the highest possible rating.
