Terence James "Jim" O'Neill, Baron O'Neill of Gatley (born March 17, 1957 in Manchester , England ) is a British economist and has been a member of the House of Lords since 2015 .

Life

Jim O'Neill was born in Manchester on March 17, 1957. He grew up in Gatley , a suburb of Manchester. After attending Burnage High School, he studied economics at the University of Sheffield .

He has been an avid Manchester United fan since childhood . He was therefore from 2004 to 2005 board member of Manchester United until Malcolm Glazer took over the majority in 2005. He belongs to a group of wealthy fans called the Red Knights . This group planned to take over the club from Malcolm Glazer in 2010.

Career

He became known for the publication of a paper in November 2001 in which he forecast the strong economic growth of Brazil , Russia , India and the People's Republic of China . He used the abbreviation BRIC , which stands for the first letters of the four countries. The term later became known and widely used around the world after the four states experienced strong economic growth.

In December 2005, he published the list of the Next Eleven , consisting of eleven high-population states that could experience a similar economic boom as the BRIC countries. Other abbreviations such as MIKT ( Mexico , Indonesia , South Korea and Turkey ) also come from him. However, these four states are already among the Next Eleven . O'Neill has made a lot of money in the forex markets around the world by making accurate predictions . He is named by many experts as one of the best economists in the field of developing and emerging countries . He is currently on the international advisory board of the Center for Rising Powers at Cambridge University .

House of Lords

On May 28, 2015, O'Neill was named a Life Peer with the title Baron O'Neill of Gatley , of Gatley in the County of Greater Manchester. This also made him a member of the House of Lords.
