Robert Jeremy Goltho Grantham , CBE (born October 6, 1938 in Ware , Hertfordshire ) is a British investor and philanthropist .

Life

Grantham studied economics at the University of Sheffield until he graduated in 1961 . In 1966 he received his MBA from Harvard Business School .

In 1971, as one of the two owners of Batterymarch Financial Management, he started one of the world's first index funds . Grantham is the founder of Grantham, Mayo, & van Otterloo (GMO). Annually, he and his wife Hanne donate more than $ 30 million to a variety of nonprofit and educational institutions. A particular concern of his is the fight against the climate crisis ; In 2019, Grantham pledged more than 98% of his net worth, equivalent to around 1 billion US dollars, to fight the climate crisis. He once commented on this mission as follows: "I don't really see this as philanthropy, but as a necessary defense measure for my children, grandchildren and their descendants."

In 2014 Grantham was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 2016 he was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his " exceptional services to climate change research " .

In April 2019 he published a new memorandum together with Lucas White, the co-founder of his investment company GMO. In it they drew attention to the effects of the climate crisis: “Hurricanes, typhoons, droughts, forest fires and other extreme weather events cause record damage. Climate change is having an increasing impact on the economy and our daily lives and represents an existential threat to the world as we know it. ”At the same time, they emphasized the potential for investors. The Scriptures said: “We are rapidly approaching a time when the world will be forced to act aggressively in order to overcome decades of inactivity. As for-profit investors, these efforts provide the backdrop for decades of long-term growth in the climate change business and potential for strong profits. [...] If climate change affects the economy, there will be strong demand for the products and services of companies that focus on climate protection. "
