Ian Douglas Cooke (born March 19, 1935 in Sydney ) is an Australian medical doctor and professor emeritus from the University of Sheffield .

life and work

Ian Cooke was born to Douglas and Mary Cooke, nee Pickles.

Cooke studied medicine at the University of Sydney (graduated in 1958). After research stays in Aberdeen , Stockholm and Cleveland , he came to England in 1962 after completing his doctorate in Sydney to obtain a doctorate in gynecology and obstetrics. He took up a position as Senior Lecturer at the Welsh National School of Medicine . In 1972 he accepted a position at the University of Sheffield, where he headed the Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Cooke headed the chair for 28 years and retired in 2000.

Cooke specialized in reproductive medicine and founded a reproductive medicine research facility, the Harris Birthright Research Center for Reproductive Medicine , at the Jessop Hospital for Women , which closed in 2001 . As a representative of the UK on the Executive Committee of the International Federation of Fertility Societies (IFFS), he formed an Education Committee, which he chaired from 2001 to 2010. He also published a compendium of laws and regulations relating to assisted reproductive technology (ART). He was chairman of the Infertility Research Trust, which has supported scientific projects in the field of human reproduction.

He is a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FRCOG; County 1980–1992, Sims Black Visiting Professor West Africa 1996, Simpson Orator 1998), a member of the British Fertility Society (BFS; County since 1991, Chairman since 1996), a member of British Society for Study Fertility , the Endocrine Society , the British Medical Association (BMA), Fellow of the British Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci) and Honorary Member of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FRANZCOG). The University of Sheffield awarded him an honorary doctorate.

He has been married since 1965 and has a son and a daughter.
