The British Medical Association (BMA) is a British medical organization and union and publisher of the British Medical Journal .

history

The organization was founded on July 19, 1832 by Sir Charles Hastings at Worcester Hospital . The aim of the association should be to bring doctors together scientifically as well as personally. The association initially ran under the name Provincial Medical and Surgical Association (PMSA) until 1856 . Ten years after its inception, the association began to publish a weekly journal, which from 1857 on was called the British Medical Journal . The organization was instrumental in the formulation of the British Medical Act (1858), which defines the qualifications required to practice the medical profession. The BMA should continue to influence UK medical legislation. During the First World War , the BMA was commissioned to organize military and civil medical care. In recent times, the organization, which has also been recognized as a trade union since 1971, has mainly been concerned with salary negotiations and the integration of European Union legislation into the British healthcare system.

According to its own information, the association has over 145,000 members. The organization has been headquartered in the BMA House in London since the 1870s . Chief executive officer is Tom Grinyer.
