Sacred Heart Church

The Herz-Jesu-Kirche is a Catholic church in the Mannheim district of Neckarstadt-West . The neo-Romanesque building was built between 1901 and 1904 according to plans by Ludwig Maier .

history

The Neckarstadt lies, separated by the Neckar , on the opposite side of the Mannheim city center. The Neckar gardens were originally located there. With the growing population of the city in the 19th century, the old city area became too small, so that gradually the residential development spread to the other side of the Neckar. In 1871 there were already 2,200 people living there, 1,500 of them Catholics, for whose care the pastor of the Lower Parish of St. Sebastian was responsible. From 1876 to 1878 an emergency church was built on the corner of Mittelstrasse / Laurentiusstrasse according to plans by Wilhelm Lutz , the three-aisled St. Laurentius Church, and in 1889 a curate was established. The later Archbishop of Freiburg, Karl Fritz, acted as the second curate here in 1895/96 .

The population continued to grow rapidly due to the influx of workers during the industrialization of Mannheim, so that in 1900 there were 9,402 Catholics in Neckarstadt. As a result, an independent parish was set up in 1903 . The patronage changed from Laurentius to Herz Jesu , because the Käfertal, which was incorporated in 1897, already had a St. Laurentius Church . The construction of a new, larger church had already started in 1901. It was until 1904 according to plans by Ludwig Maier under the supervision of Josef Kuld finished and by Archbishop on May 24, 1908 Thomas Nörber consecrated . The first pastor was Johann Baptist Knebel , who from 1909 was also a member of the Baden state parliament. The church was painted by Franz Wallischeck . The ceiling was decorated with six large scenes from the New Testament, surrounded by smaller pictures with stations from the life of St. Anthony . The high altar came from the renowned Marmon art workshop . Since 1913 the choir has been adorned with a large depiction of the Sacred Heart by the Düsseldorf painter Feldmann. A baroque crucifixion group from the old Catholic cemetery was placed in the right and a Pietà by the sculptor Rupp in the left aisle.

Even after the church was built, the city on the Neckar continued to grow and in the 1920s the Herz-Jesu parish was the most populous in the diocese of Freiburg , so that more churches were built and parishes were separated over time: St. Bonifatius Church , St. .-Nikolaus-Kirche and St.-Bernhard-Kirche . Today it forms the Catholic parish Mannheim-Neckarstadt with these parishes .

After an air raid in World War II , the Sacred Heart Church burned down to the outer walls in 1943. Under the direction of Hans Rolli , it was rebuilt between 1947 and 1949, the interior design continued until 1954. The alteration of the chancel according to the guidelines of the Second Vatican Council was carried out in 1974/75. In 2007, the parishes of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and St. Nikolaus were merged to form the Neckarstadt-West pastoral care unit.

description

The Herz-Jesu-Kirche is on Mittelstrasse, the main street in Neckarstadt-West. The three-aisled basilica has a transept with a semicircular closed choir and two side choirs. Another transept is located on the main portal side, which is characterized by the mighty one-tower facade. The neo-Romanesque style church is 41.46 meters long, 24.50 meters wide, 27 meters in the transept and 15.80 meters high in the central nave. On the main front there are three arched portals with set columns. The main portal has a gable triangle crowned with a stone cross. The pediment is decorated with a frieze , animal heads, reclining animal reliefs and a figure of Jesus. Above that there is a large, recessed false window, flanked on the sides by triplet windows. Another triangular gable points up to the tower, which is covered by a pyramidal roof .

inner space

When the chancel was redesigned in 1974/75, the communion bench , which had become inoperable, was removed and an altar island was created that was moved into the room. The sculptor Frido Lehr designed the altar and the ambo . The rich painting of the church was lost in the Second World War. In 1960 Rudolf Kaufhold created a new painting for the chancel. It shows Jesus Christ with a welcoming gesture. Saints Vincent Pallotti , Bernhard von Baden , Karl Borromäus , Laurentius , Agnes , Margareta Maria Alacoque , Johannes and Theresa are depicted at his feet . The carved Stations of the Cross dates from 1905.

Peal

The ringing originally consisted of a small bell from 1729, which came from the chapel of the old Catholic cemetery in K2 / K3 , and the bells that were cast in 1904, the year the church was inaugurated. Except for the small one, they had to be given up in the First World War. In 1922 four new steel bells were procured. They survived the church fire in 1943 while the little bell melted.
