Life

Maximilian was the youngest son of Grand Duke Karl Friedrich from his morganatic marriage to Luise Karoline Geyer von Geyersberg .

He was educated in Karlsruhe and on March 16, 1813 employed as a major in the "von Geusau" dragoon regiment of the Baden army . First in the general staff of the Baden troops, Maximilian took part in the fighting against Prussia with the French, then came to the staff of Marshal Marmont and was able to distinguish himself at Leipzig . During the street fighting there, Maximilian fell from his horse and was taken prisoner, which he spent in Berlin and later in Neuruppin. After Baden had sided with the Alliance , Maximilian was released and, in recognition of his brave behavior, was appointed commander of a squadron in the "von Geusau" dragoon regiment. In this position he took part in the sieges of Strasbourg and Kehl during the wars of liberation . He was able to distinguish himself again, but was seriously wounded by a saber blow on the head and a stab through the upper arm. In recognition of this, Maximilian was praised in the army report and awarded the Military Karl Friedrich Order of Merit.

After the peace treaty he advanced to lieutenant colonel at the beginning of 1816 and was recognized the following year on October 4, 1817 as the Grand Ducal Prince and Margrave of Baden. On February 11, 1821 Maximilian became a colonel and on February 14, 1826 commander of the Garde du Corps .

In 1835 the Russian Emperor Nikolaus awarded the Margrave the Order of St. Anne first class and had it handed over by Paul Friedrich von Moltke , the Imperial Russian Chargé d'Affaires at the Grand Ducal Court of Baden.

In 1856 Maximilian became chief of the 2nd Dragoons Regiment , which was also named after the 2nd Dragoons Regiment "Margrave Maximilian". After the military convention and the transfer to the Prussian Army , it was named 2nd Badisches Dragoon Regiment "Margrave Maximilian" No. 23.

In addition to his military career, Maximilian also pursued agricultural interests. Therefore, in 1835 he acquired the Abtsgrundhof on an island on the Rhine near Karlsruhe. The margrave had the acquired area arable and connected the three remaining islands with one another. He gave the manor and the place founded in the same year his name. This was now called Maximilians-Aue. Today the farm is called Hofgut Maxau . He and his brothers had received the Kirschgartshausen estate near Mannheim as early as 1804 as Count von Hochberg. There are u. a. a lintel from 1822, with the Baden coat of arms and the inscription referring to Maximilian and his brother Ludwig Wilhelm : "LW and M. MARKGRAFEN zu BADEN 1822" .

From 1819 until his death in 1882, Maximilian was a member of the First Chamber of the Baden Estates as Prince of the Grand Ducal House . Maximilian died at the age of 85 and is buried in the grand ducal grave chapel in Karlsruhe.
