The Konkordienkirche was the first and central church in Karlsruhe . It was built in 1719-22 as an Evangelical Lutheran church on what was then the southern edge of the newly founded city, centrally opposite the castle . The design is attributed to the architect Friedrich von Batzendorff. The result was a regular four-cone building with a surrounding gallery and a small central tower in the Baroque style . For cost reasons, instead of the initially planned massive stone building, the half-timbered construction was chosen. In 1738 the city's founder, Karl Wilhelm von Baden, was buried in the Konkordienkirche.

Neither the church nor the small market square that arose before it was sufficient for the further development of the growing city of Karlsruhe. The construction had to give way to the city expansion to the south and the enlargement of the market square in 1807 . As a result, a protracted competition broke out over the future appearance of the tomb for the city founder. Finally, Friedrich Weinbrenner erected the Karlsruhe pyramid above the crypt and thus on the site of the Konkordienkirche .

As part of the redesign of the Karlsruhe market square as part of the construction of the tram tunnel under the market square, various options have been examined since June 2014 to make the floor plan of the Konkordienkirche visible, including the remaining foundations. A decision as to whether the floor plan is above ground (visualization of the remains through a glass surface in the floor that shows the foundations at the original site, and tracing of the floor plan with mosaic stones in the flooring) or underground (presentation of the archaeological finds in the event room above track 3 of the newly built underground Stop “Marktplatz”) is expected in summer 2014.
