Barry Scheck (born September 19, 1949 ) is an American criminal defense attorney and professor . He gained worldwide fame in 1994 as a defense attorney in the criminal case against OJ Simpson .

life and career

Check was in New York City in the district of Queens born. He studied American Studies and Economics at Yale University and graduated with a BA in 1971 . In 1974 he received a Juris Doctor from the University of California at Berkeley . Scheck has been working as a criminal defense attorney since graduating. He is the founder and partner of the law firm Neufeld Scheck & Brustin in New York. Since 1977 he has taught in various positions at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, most recently as a law professor.

Scheck is recognized as a leading expert in the field of DNA analysis in criminal proceedings. Together with his partner Peter Neufeld he founded the organization Innocence Project , which focuses on the reversal of false guilty verdicts with the help of DNA evidence. Since the project began, acquittals of over 250 people have been achieved. 15 of them had been sentenced to death.

Scheck achieved worldwide fame in 1994 in the criminal case against OJ Simpson . His expertise made it possible to cast doubt on much of the DNA evidence presented by prosecutors. Scheck's work is largely partly responsible for ensuring that the defense was able to obtain an acquittal for Simpson.
