The Nordstadt is the youngest part of Karlsruhe . It was only formed in 1996, mostly from properties of the withdrawn 7th US Army .
The northern city is narrow and elongated, in the east it meets the Hardtwald .
In the north are the buildings of the Smiley Barracks , originally Forstner barracks from 1937, now used by a tenant initiative and some public institutions. In addition, new terraced houses were built up to the border of Neureut .
The center is formed by the apartment blocks of the Paul Revere Village , built from 1951 , surrounded by strips of forest with playgrounds. They have been modernized and supplemented with additional floors and some new houses. This area also includes schools such as the Maryland School, an elementary school with an all-day and Montessori train, and the private Heisenberg High School.
In the south, the Hardtwaldsiedlung from the 1920s, which had previously belonged to the Weststadt , was added.
On the western edge, along the abandoned airfield , which is now a nature reserve, there are commercial areas and the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University in Karlsruhe .
