Friedrichsplatz (Karlsruhe)
The Friedrichsplatz is a central place in the city of Karlsruhe .
history
In 1730 the construction of the first garden and park in the style of an English garden began on the area of today's Friedrichsplatz. This park existed until the 1870s and was named after the Crown Prince Ludwig Prince garden called. In 1856 there were first considerations for a redesign of the park. The reason for this was the rich collection of books, coins and minerals that were housed in Karlsruhe Palace at the time. Because of the shortage of space, planning began for a new collection building in a central public square. Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden suggested an architecture competition that was to include a museum building and a representative space in front of it. The winner of the competition was the Weinbrenner student Karl Joseph Berckmüller . Berckmüller designed the State Museum of Natural History and planned some of the other buildings that were to be built around the newly emerging square. Among other things, some residential buildings as well as several ministries of the state of Baden were built there . Across from the natural history museum, a fountain by the sculptor Karl Mayer was built in 1874 .
With the completion of the Natural History Museum building, the former Hereditary Prince Garden was divided into two parts. The newly created nymph garden was built to the south of it . The northern part of the park was named after Frederick I and is now divided into two parts by the Erbprinzenstrasse, which runs diagonally to it.
After the Second World War, many of the buildings on Friedrichsplatz were damaged or destroyed. Some of the buildings were rebuilt or replaced by new buildings. One of the planners of the new buildings on Friedrichsplatz was the Karlsruhe architect Erich Schelling .
Due to permanent construction work on the market square , events such as the Christkindlesmarkt have been relocated to Friedrichsplatz since around 2010 , with some of the plants being removed.
