The City Library Karlsruhe is the public library of the city of Karlsruhe with a stock of about 305,700 media. It includes five branches in the districts of Karlsruhe, a children's and youth library and an American library. In addition, remote parts of the city are supplied by a media bus that provides around 6,000 different media.

history

The city library was founded in 1921 and was located on Rondellplatz at that time. Then it moved several times and was last in 1993 on the market square. That year she moved into the new Ständehaus planned by the architect Jürgen Schroeder . To commemorate its earlier use as a parliament, a “Ständehaus memorial”, which is integrated into the library, provides information.

  • Durlach : The Durlach district library was founded in 1908. It is thus the oldest branch of the city library, is located in Karlsburg and comprises around 32,500 media.
  • Grötzingen : The branch was founded in 1974 and today comprises around 16,500 media.
  • Mühlburg : The branch was opened in 1959 and is the second oldest after the Durlach district library. It includes around 16,000. The district library has moved to the new community center on Weinbrennerstrasse.
  • Waldstadt : The district library comprises around 26,000 media.
  • Neureut : The Neureut branch is located above the Badenerlandhalle and comprises around 29,000 media.
  • Media bus: The media bus runs daily through the outskirts of Karlsruhe and through the mountain villages. The media bus comprises around 6,000 media.

The children's and youth library ⊙ has been located in the Prinz-Max-Palais since 1981 .

American library

After the American armed forces left Karlsruhe, they also left a library behind. The Friends of the American Library Karlsruhe eV, founded in 1994, campaigned for this to be left to the city. It was opened in 1996 as a branch of the city library and houses 35,000 English-language books, CDs and other media.
