life and work

Erich Schelling studied from 1924 to 1928 at the Staatstechnikum Karlsruhe after he had previously passed the examination to become a draftsman . From 1926 to 1927 he was head of the building ceramics department of the Grand Ducal Majolica Manufactory in Karlsruhe. From 1930 to 1933 he studied architecture a second time at the Technical University of Fridericiana in Karlsruhe under Hermann Billing and Max Laeuger .

In 1933 Erich Schelling joined the SA and in 1937 the NSDAP .

After four years as an employee in Hermann Alker's office , he worked as a freelance architect in Karlsruhe from 1937. In the same year he became a professor at the Karlsruhe State Technical Center, today's Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences . In 1942, Schelling was released from his duties at the state technical center in order to be able to devote himself to construction work in neighboring Alsace. In 1942 he opened a branch in Strasbourg . Both offices were closed with the end of the war.

The Karlsruhe office began to work again in 1946, and in 1949 the first larger orders followed, such as for FAG Kugelfischer-Werke in Schweinfurt . With the construction of the Black Forest Hall in Karlsruhe in 1953, he caused a stir throughout Europe. It was the first hall in Europe to have a parabolic suspended roof made of prestressed concrete with a shell only six centimeters thick.

His draft for the general development plan for the Karlsruhe nuclear research center was followed by a series of orders for operating and laboratory buildings on the site from 1955.

The Black Forest Hall, the Nancy Hall, the Karlsruhe Chamber of Crafts and the LVA building are registered as cultural monuments in the monument book.

The German Architecture Museum in Frankfurt am Main was from 14 February to 12 April, 2009 an exhibition under the title For example Schelling important buildings Erich Schelling in the model and in photographs. The exhibition dealt in particular with the threat posed by demolition and modernization to post-war architectural modernism. On the basis of photographic comparisons, renovations in line with historic monuments, but also disfiguring alterations to Schelling's architecture are demonstrated.

Schelling was married to the interior designer Trude Schelling-Karrer , who was also his long-time employee. She donated an architecture prize in his honor, the Erich Schelling Architecture Prize , which is awarded every two years on the day of his death.
