Kim Seong-Dong (born November 8, 1947 in Poryŏng , Ch'ungch'ŏngnam-do ) is a South Korean writer .

Life

Kim Seong-Dong was born on November 8, 1947 in Poryŏng, the son of a communist functionary. As a result of an ideological argument that ended in a brutal bloodbath, Kim lost his father and other family members, both on his mother's and her father's side, and grew up with the stigma of the communist son. This experience left its mark and as a student at Sorabol High School , he joined a Buddhist order to become a student of the Zen master Chihyo .

When his short story Mokt'akcho ( 목탁 조 ) was published in the weekly Religion ( 주간 종교 ) in 1975 , he was accused of defaming the Order and duly excommunicated. Kim returned to the worldly sphere and started working for various magazines and publishers. His writing career began in 1978 when the short story Mandala ( 만다라 ) was published in Korean Literature ( 한국 문학 ). In the following year he revised and expanded the text into a novel.

Kim's later works deal with the brutal legacy of the Korean War and are based on his own experiences. The recurring motif of the 'mother's inexplicable stomach ache' is linked to the traumatic effects of the war and the division of the country on ordinary people. The author's focus here is not on the war, but on the survivors of these atrocities who have to grapple with material difficulties and the responsibility to appease the 'lonely spirit of the [dead] father'.
