The Hereditary Grand Ducal Palace in Karlsruhe on Kriegsstrasse has been the seat of the Federal Court of Justice since 1950 .

It was built from 1891 to 1897 by Josef Durm for the then Hereditary Grand Duke , later Grand Duke Friedrich II of Baden (1857–1928) and his wife Hilda von Nassau (1864–1952). Even when Friedrich succeeded his father on the throne in 1907, they both stayed there.

During the Second World War, the building's attic and roof domes were destroyed. The historic mansard roof was not reproduced again until 2010–2012 .

Garden area

The property used covers an area of around four hectares, embedded in a park- like outdoor area. The appearance of the garden has been subject to constant change over the past 140 years and has changed again with the expansion of the Federal Court of Justice.

The main design features of the site on the north side of the imposing palace, which was built on an artificial hill, were designed and implemented in 1817 by Friedrich Weinbrenner, the head building director of Baden, in connection with the planning of a garden palace.

The garden on the south side of the Palais (the side facing Kriegsstrasse) was redesigned at the end of the 19th century as part of the expansion of the original garden palace by the then head of the building department, Josef Durm. The core was, inter alia, in six steps from a terrace leading down and a round pool with fountain opens cascade . With the exception of the terrace, which was completely renovated in 2006, the cascade fell victim to the car-friendly expansion of the Kriegsstrasse and Karlstor in 1970. The present Galatea fountain by Karl Friedrich Moest , however, was only located at the Federal Court of Justice in 1954.

As long as the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office at the Federal Court of Justice was also housed on the grounds in Herrenstrasse, large parts of the garden had to be dismantled for lack of other alternatives and used as parking spaces. With the move of the Federal Prosecutor's Office to the newly constructed building in Brauerstrasse and the expansion of the Federal Court of Justice in 2003, an originally planned underground car park could not be realized for cost reasons. Nevertheless, the garden regained many elements of its original characteristics. These include in particular the wide lawns and the old trees.

Despite the departure of the Federal Prosecutor's Office, the park has not yet been made accessible to the public due to the tightening security situation since 2001.
