history

Weil Mausoleum (2008)
Renovation of the Weil mausoleum in 2011

Since Jews were not allowed to bury their dead in Christian cemeteries , the Kraichgau Jews had to bury their dead in the Jewish cemetery in Speyer (until 1435) and then in the Jewish cemetery in Worms . The Jewish cemetery in Oberöwisheim (from 1629) and later the Jewish cemetery in Waibstadt was built for the Kraichgau Jews .

The Waibstadter Friedhof Am Mühlbergwald has 2556 gravestones on an area of 233.32 ares , the oldest dating from 1690 and the youngest from 1940. 18 Jewish communities had jointly built the association cemetery. By 1860 there were around 80 communities that buried their dead there. In 1913 there were only the following communities: Bonfeld , Grombach , Hoffenheim , Hüffenhardt , Neckarbischofsheim , Neidenstein , Obergimpern , Steinsfurt , Waibstadt and Wollenberg .

The cemetery hall ( Tahara house ) built in 1856 was demolished in 1958 and from 1987 to 1993 some of the tombstones were repaired.

West of the cemetery is the mausoleum of the Jewish entrepreneur Hermann Weil (1868–1927) and his wife. Weil came from Steinsfurt and wanted his urn to be buried at the traditional burial site of the Steinsfurt Jews in Waibstadt. Since the Jewish rite forbids urn burials in cemeteries, Weil had the mausoleum built right next to the Jewish cemetery in 1924 for his urn and that of his (Christian) wife and nurse Steffi Krauth. The mausoleum consists of an octagonal domed structure with an adjoining courtyard and a staircase in front. The dome building had a marble floor and a mosaic ceiling.

On November 10, 1938, the mausoleum was desecrated and badly damaged as part of the November pogroms. The three urns have disappeared to this day. The mausoleum was renovated from 1980 to 1983 by the City of Waibstadt, the Sinsheim Forestry Office and the Neckartal / Odenwald Nature Park. Another comprehensive renovation took place from 2010 to 2012.
