history
Antiquity
The place was founded under the name Tabernae as a rest stop on the Roman highway from Italy via Basel to Mainz . Rheinzabern celebrated its 1950th anniversary in 2004, making it the oldest municipality in the southern Palatinate . In Roman times pottery was mainly produced here. Tabernae rhenanae was the most important pottery settlement in the Roman Empire north of the Alps . The Terra Sigillata clay, which was exported across Europe, is particularly famous . You can still visit the ancient kilns today . Roman building ceramics were made for the Mogontiacum fort (Mainz) , among others . Interdisciplinary research made it possible to locate bricks bearing the brick stamp of Legio XXII Primigenia for the production provenance of Rheinzabern.
The numerous finds, some of them well-preserved, from the 400-year period of Roman rule are mainly kept in the Palatinate History Museum in Speyer.
middle Ages
After the Roman settlement was burned down by vandals at the beginning of the fifth century, the history of Rheinzabern is lost, but various historical contexts suggest that a royal court was established here in the eighth century, in which a church already existed at the time of the Merovingians The year 746 came as a gift from the Frankish housekeeper Karlmann to the Blidenfeld monastery .
In the 12th century the place was counted as Zabern to the old legacy of the bishopric of Speyer , which probably came into possession of the place through a donation from Emperor Heinrich IV . Until the bishop's seat was moved to Bruchsal in 1188, the castle in Zabern was the seat of the Speyer prince-bishops. In the 14th century the place was given its current name Rheinzabern to distinguish it from Bergzabern, which was originally just called Zabern . In 1366 Rheinzabern was mentioned as a town with escort and customs rights. Crafts and trade flourished here as well as market events that were important for the surrounding area. Rheinzabern was part of the Lauterburg Oberamt and was part of the Jockgrim winery .
Modern times
During the Thirty Years' War and the subsequent armed conflicts that lasted around a century, the place suffered greatly, and by 1750 all of the city walls were razed. Nevertheless, the destruction of the war also resulted in subsequent redevelopment of the city area: the church was renovated in 1711, the town hall was rebuilt in 1718, and the church was completely rebuilt in 1766. The peacetime growth in the late 18th century resulted in a significant expansion of the church in 1777/78.
In the course of the French Revolution , Rheinzabern came to France in 1789 and later belonged to the arrondissement of Weißenburg in the Lower Rhine department , where it was incorporated into the canton of Kandel . In the following years, Rheinzabern suffered again from armed conflicts and troop movements. From 1815 to 1816 the place was under the administration of the imperial Austrian administration in Landau , on May 16, 1816 then to the Kingdom of Bavaria . From 1818 to 1862 he was a member of the Landkommissariat Germersheim ; from this the district office of Germersheim emerged.
Rheinzabern has been part of the district of Germersheim since 1939 . After the Second World War , the place became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone . In the course of the first administrative reform in Rhineland-Palatinate , the community was added to the newly formed Jockgrim community in 1972 .
