The Terra Sigillata Museum in Rheinzabern ( Rhineland-Palatinate ) shows archaeological finds from what is probably the most important pottery factory of the Roman era in Germany. These are mainly fine ceramic tableware, so-called terra sigillata , which found high sales in the north-west provinces of the Roman Empire.

location

The museum is located at Hauptstrasse 35 near the parish church of Sankt Michael. The building is handicapped accessible with a ramp and an elevator.

exhibition

The local history of Rheinzabern is presented on the ground floor of the museum, with a focus on the Roman era and pottery production . Benefiting from raw material deposits ( clay and wood) and a convenient location on the Rhine and the Roman Rhine bank road , the place Tabernae developed into an important production center for pottery, mainly so-called terra sigillata (the term comes from the 19th century), but also other uses - and fine ceramics as well as bricks were produced in Rheinzabern. Various brick stamps that are exhibited on the ground floor document the use of the Rheinzabern brickworks by the Legio I Adiutrix , the Legio IIII Macedonica , Legio VII Gemina , Legio XIIII Gemina , Legio XXI Rapax , Legio XXII Primigenia and numerous late Roman units. A short film explains the historical context. Finds from local history are shown in the showcases of the rooms there.

The first floor is dedicated to the Roman ceramic production . The large number of vessels produced takes up an entire space. Due to the origin of the finds, mainly from oven finds and pottery waste, the preservation of the vessels is much better than is the case with conventional settlement finds, for example. Another room explains the production technology of the Terra Sigillata . A furnace with filling was reconstructed in the middle of the room. The showcases show finds of stamps and molds to explain the production process.

Changing exhibitions take place on the 2nd floor.

Roman kilns are integrated into the kindergarten building on Faustinastrasse. After registration, these can be viewed during guided tours.
