Juan de Borja Lanzol de Romaní
Juan de Borja Lanzol de Romaní (the elder) (also: Juan de Borgia ; * 1446 in Valencia ; † August 1, 1503 in Rome ) was Archbishop of Monreale , Administrator of Olomouc , Bishop of Melfi , Bishop of Ferrara , Cardinal of the Roman Church and titular Latin Patriarch of Constantinople .
Life
He was the son of Juana de Borja, the sister of Rodrigo Borgias, and Pere-Guillem Llançol de Romaní, eighth señor de Villalonga. Juan de Borgia was thus a relative of the Popes Calixt III. and Alexander VI. On September 13, 1483 he was appointed Archbishop of Monreale and on August 31, 1492 he was elevated to cardinal priest of Santa Susanna . From 1496 to 1500 he was also cardinal deacon of Santa Maria in Portico .
After the resignation of the Olomouc administrator Ardicino della Porta in 1492, the Pope appointed Juan de Borgia as his successor. Although he had never entered the Diocese of Olomouc, he held this office from February 8, 1493 to January 30, 1497. In the Olomouc bishops' list he is named John XV. Called Borgia . Only after the then Olomouc canon Stanislaus Thurzo on behalf of the cathedral chapter with Pope Alexander VI. negotiating the re-occupation of the bishopric, Juan de Borgia renounced the Olomouc administrative office (wrongly episcopal office) in 1497 in return for an annual pension of 500 ducats.
In addition, Juan de Borgia was:
- from September 19, 1494 to December 3, 1498 Bishop of Melfi as well
- since October 29, 1494 also Bishop of Ferrara.
- On April 24, 1503 the Pope elevated him to Latin (titular) Patriarch of Constantinople . With this office, the Catholic Church upheld its claim to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, which it had established after the 4th Crusade .
Cardinal Juan de Borja Lanzol de Romaní (the elder) should not be confused with his younger relative of the same name, Juan de Borja Llançol de Romaní (1470–1500), who was also cardinal from 1496.
