The Erlenbach is a 34.2 km long stream in Rhineland-Palatinate and a left tributary of the Michelsbach . It flows along its entire length through the southern Palatinate and mostly parallel to federal highway 427 .
course
The Erlenbach rises in Wasgau in the south of the Palatinate , the southern part of the Palatinate Forest , at an altitude of 245 m above sea level. NHN in the municipality of Birkenhördt near the Catholic parish church of St. Gallus . The spring is on private property and has a well structure; the spring water is drained underground. Below the village, the now open stream flows in a sloping valley to the southeast. He passes two former mills, the Gehlmühle and the Augspurger Mühle. Before Bad Bergzabern he leaves the low mountain range on the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest.
At the entrance to the town of Bad Bergzabern, the stream is dammed up in front of the spa area to the Schwanenweiher , which is also known as the reservoir . The water running off from this disappears piped underground. At the eastern end of the spa park there is an underground overflow branch at the level of the Südpfalz-Therme. The left-hand section with normal supply of all water is called Woodbach from here on and is the formerly open mill ditch of the city mill, in which it drives an iron mill wheel . Shortly before the Woodbach reaches the mill on the old city wall , it comes to the surface for a few meters, while it used to flow openly through the city below the mill, along Bachgasse, today's Königsstrasse. After the piping, it can only be seen in the vicinity of the “Zum Engel” inn. At the eastern edge of the city, the Woodbach comes to light again and joins the actual Erlenbach, whose drainage channel in the urban area runs parallel to the underground below the Weinstrasse , but only flows from the overflow junction when there is excess water.
Now the Erlenbach crosses the Upper Rhine Plain with a slight gradient towards the Rhine . He passes Kapellen-Drusweiler , Oberhausen and Barbelroth . Then before Winden it takes up the Horbach coming from Gleiszellen-Gleishorbach as a left tributary and branches into several parallel rivers, such as Bruchgraben, Bauerngraben and Flutgraben. The Waidlachgraben, Grüner Graben and Feldlachgraben follow later as left tributaries. Then the Erlenbach forms the border between Kandel and Erlenbach or Hatzenbühl . After passing Rheinzabern and Neupotz , it joins the Michelsbach coming from the right in Leimersheim .
The Michelsbach, north-western outflow of the Fischmal lake fed by the Otterbach , is formed by several successive loops of the Old Rhine and flows into the Rhine from the left at Sondernheim after about 10 km , the height of the mouth being 96 m . Together with the Otterbach and the Klingbach over the Michelsbach, the Erlenbach forms a contiguous catchment area .
