The area of ​​the Verbandsgemeinde extends over three landscape areas. The east is part of the Upper Rhine Plain and includes part of the Bienwald and the cattle line . The middle part is in the Weinstrasse region . The west protrudes into the Wasgau , as the southern part of the Palatinate Forest and the adjoining northern part of the Vosges are also called. In the north are the 503.7 meters high Treutelsberg , the Abtskopf (487 meters), the Vorderweidenthaler Schloßberg (437.6 meters) and the Eulenkopf (315 meters). In the south-west rise the Farrenberg ( 489.3  m ), the Stäffelsberg (480.8 meters), the Oberotterbacher Schloßberg (503 meters) and the Hohe Derst (561 meters); The latter is also the highest elevation in the area of ​​the Verbandsgemeinde. Waters

In the extreme south the Wieslauter runs in a west-east direction , which receives several left tributaries such as the Erlenbach , the Reisbach and the Rußbach , which at least flow through the area of ​​the Verbandsgemeinde.

Further north, the Otterbach also runs from west to east , which rises in Rothenbrunnen and which includes the Dierbach from the left and the Bruchbach from the right . The Erlenbach flows centrally in a west-east direction , which initially absorbs the Böllenborn from the right and the Anbach from the left shortly before Bad Bergzabern . East of the spa town comes the Horbach from the left . In the far north the Klingbach and for a short stretch its left tributary Kaiserbach runs over the territory of Klingenmünster. The Martha spring is also within the boundaries of the latter municipality .

The Verbandsgemeinde Bad Bergzabern was formed as part of the Rhineland-Palatinate functional and territorial reform that began in the 1960s on the basis of the “Thirteenth State Law on Administrative Simplification in the State of Rhineland-Palatinate” of March 1, 1972, which came into force on April 22 1972.

Previously, the administrative structures originating from the Bavarian Palatinate (1816–1946) essentially applied in the then administrative district of Palatinate .
