The Verbandsgemeinde Herxheim became part of the Rhineland-Palatinate territorial and administrative reform on the basis of the "Thirteenth State Law on Administrative Simplification in the State of Rhineland-Palatinate" of March 1, 1972, came into force on April 22, 1972, newly formed.

Elmar Weiller ( CDU ) was mayor of the Herxheim community from 1973 until his retirement in 2007. His successor was Franz-Ludwig Trauth (independent, later CDU) on September 1, 2007, who had prevailed in the runoff election on May 20, 2007 with 55.2 percent against Georg Kern (CDU). On April 26, 2015, Hedwig Braun was elected (independent) as the new mayor.
