In the Schwarzwald-Baar district there are 26 nature reserves. The Freiburg regional council is responsible for the designation of nature reserves . According to the protected area statistics of the State Institute for the Environment, Measurements and Nature Conservation Baden-Württemberg (LUBW), 2,085.39 hectares of the district area are under nature protection, that is 2.03 percent.
