Location of the city of Triberg in the Black Forest in the Schwarzwald-Baar district | ||
Triberg im Schwarzwald is a German city in Baden-Württemberg and belongs to the Schwarzwald-Baar district in the administrative district of Freiburg .
geography
Geographical location
Triberg is located in the southern part of the Middle Black Forest at an altitude of 600 to 1038 meters on the federal highways 33 and 500 as well as on the Deutsche Uhrenstraße and is the stop of the Black Forest Railway . The next larger cities with central functions are to the southeast of Villingen-Schwenningen (about 32 km) and to the southwest of Freiburg im Breisgau (about 45 km).
Hardly any other city in the Black Forest is located in a similarly deep valley. The development of the core city of Triberg extends over height differences of around 250 m (train station around 600 m above sea level , youth hostel around 850 m above sea level ). For urban planning, this always means new challenges. With the Triberg business park above the waterfall, the less steep plateau is being used for the first time.
Neighboring communities
The city borders in the north on the city of Hornberg in the Ortenaukreis and Schonachbach, a sub-municipality of Schonach in the Black Forest . Schonach also forms the western boundary of Triberg. In the east there are shared borders with the town of Schramberg ( Rottweil district ) and the town of St. Georgen in the Black Forest , in the south Triberg borders on the municipality of Schönwald in the Black Forest and the town of Furtwangen in the Black Forest .
City structure
The two formerly independent communities belong to the city of Triberg in the Black Forest:
district | coat of arms | Incorporation | Residents |
---|---|---|---|
Gremmelsbach | October 01, 1974 | 480 | |
Nussbach | 01/01/1973 | 1000 |
In addition, the city of Triberg in the Black Forest includes 86 other villages, hamlets , Zinken , farms and houses.
In the area of the former municipality of Gremmelsbach is the abandoned castle Althornberg .
history
Triberg was first mentioned in 1239 in a document in which a ministerial Peter von Triberc is mentioned. In 1330 Triberg was mentioned for the first time as a city, in 1349 the market rights that may have existed for a long time were mentioned for the first time. From 1355 to 1797 the city belonged to the House of Habsburg and thus to the Austrian rulership of Vorderösterreich . In 1805 Triberg came briefly to the Duchy of Württemberg , then in 1806 to the Grand Duchy of Baden .
A city fire almost completely destroyed the city in 1826. In the years that followed, the city was rebuilt as a planned city in the classical style. In 1884 Triberg installed the first public electric street lighting in Germany; the electricity was obtained from the over 150 m high waterfalls.
The city has had its name in the Black Forest since June 20, 1963. On January 1, 1973, the previously independent municipality of Nussbach was incorporated, followed by Gremmelsbach on October 1, 1974.

- 1895–1904: Karl Friedrich Otto Schuster
- 1904–1921: Johann Baptist de Pellegrini
- 1921–1945: Emil Keil
- after the end of the war until the end of 1961: Willy Faster (installed by the French occupation authorities, re-elected twice)
- Early 1962–1969: Heinz Villinger (≈1918–2011)
- 1969 – approx. 1985: Alfred Vogt (≈1921–2001)
- 1985–2002: Klaus Martin (CDU)
- since February 2002: Gallus Strobel
Gallus Strobel (* 1954, CDU) has been mayor since February 1, 2002; he was confirmed for a third term in November 2017 in the first ballot. Strobel is also a board member of the still existing Triberg Erlebniswelt AG and is in charge of various corporate investments in the city such as aquavilla GmbH . Strobel is a lawyer and has a doctorate on the history of justice . Because of an advertising stunt for the community that was perceived as sexist, it hit the headlines nationwide in 2015. In May 2019 Strobel resigned from the CDU after almost 20 years of membership. He justified this with Angela Merkel's efforts to protect the climate , which he rejects as nonsensical, as humans have no influence on the climate .
coat of arms
The blazon of the coat of arms reads: "Above a green three-mountain in a shield quartered with silver and red, two overturned hip horns in confused colors."
Twin cities
Triberg is a member of the Lazarus-von-Schwendi-Städtebund and the twin town of Fréjus in the French department of Var .
Economy and Infrastructure
Commercial and utility companies
In 1896, the Electricity Company Triberg GmbH (EGT) was founded by Friedrich Wilhelm Schoen , Wilhelm Eduard von Schoen and Carl von Linde . It is still active today and is active in the business areas of power generation, power distribution and electrical engineering. In 1922 Triberg, St. Georgen, Furtwangen, Hornberg and the municipality of Schonach took part in the share capital of EGT, which was renamed as an AG in 2008. Aquavilla GmbH is a spin-off that operates water supply networks.
The watch industry , which used to be strongly represented, is now reduced to museum offerings and sales outlets. The local Bühler Motor plant was also closed and demolished. The city's most important employer in 2013 is the Asklepios Clinic . The population is declining, not even 5,000 people lived in Triberg in 2012, a few years ago it was 8,000.
traffic
Triberg is connected to the rail network via the Black Forest Railway. Regional Express trains run every hour in the direction of Karlsruhe and Constance . In addition, individual intercity trains stop at Triberg station.
tourism
Due to the special topology and landscape, the low mountain range and numerous leisure facilities in the area, Triberg with the villages of Nussbach and Gremmelsbach offers good conditions for tourism. The place is on the German Clock Road . As a climatic health resort , Triberg, Nussbach and Gremmelsbach have over 1500 beds. Holidays on the farm and Black Forest farms converted into holiday apartments complete the tourist offer.
Together with four other municipalities ( Emmendingen , Steinen , Stühlingen and Wehr ), Triberg was awarded the title of Gateway to the Southern Black Forest Nature Park , making it the gateway to Germany's second largest nature park .
The Badische Zeitung According visited the end of the first decade of the 21st century about 250,000 visitors annually the immediately adjacent Triberg Waterfalls , a few years before it had been twice as many. After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , many US tourists stayed away. Dealing with a large number of day trippers and few overnight guests is a challenge for the small town.
Projects
In 2007 there was talk of the 90 million Triberg Adventure World project . The adventure world itself was shelved after disputes between the jewelery retailer Thomas Weisser, who relied on bus tourism, and the former SAP chief developer Günther Möckesch, who wanted to promote sustainable tourism . The € 2 million multi-storey car park with the men's parking spaces that have gone viral is the only construction project that has so far been carried out on the locally largest industrial wasteland in Triberg.
In the meantime there was talk of fee claims in the tens of millions from the architect Max-Dieter Mack, a relative of the amusement park mogul Roland Mack . Mayor Strobel, in his capacity as board member of Erlebniswelt Triberg AG Mack, had promised a significantly smaller budget for a preliminary study and approved it. The contract itself for the planning and construction of the parking garage went to another architectural office. Meanwhile, a shopping center and smaller tourism offers are planned.
