EGT power grid

The EGT group of companies was founded on May 11, 1896 and is now active in energy sales, energy supply and electrical engineering. In total, the EGT group of companies employs more than 200 people. The company's headquarters are in Triberg in the Black Forest . The company is divided into the management company EGT AG and the subsidiaries EGT Energie GmbH , EGT Gebäudetechnik GmbH , EGT Energiehandel GmbH and EGT Energievertrieb GmbH . Other locations of EGT building technology are in Furtwangen in the Black Forest and Freiburg in Breisgau .

EGT AG is 50 percent owned by communal shareholders ( Triberg , Schonach , Hornberg , St. Georgen and Furtwangen ) and private shareholders, e.g. B. the EGT founding family von Schoen.

history

The founders of EGT (from left): Friedrich Wilhelm von Schoen, Wilhelm Eduard Freiherr von Schoen and Carl von Linde

Foundation of EGT

Friedrich Wilhelm von Schoen, his brother Wilhelm Eduard Freiherr von Schoen and Carl von Linde founded the Triberg electricity company together with the Meißner & Co. company in 1896 . The first chairman of the supervisory board was the initiator Friedrich Wilhelm von Schoen.

After just one year, the community of St. Georgen was connected to the supply network. Despite economic setbacks, such as the fire in a three-phase power plant, a few years later the communities of Schonach, Niederwasser , Schonachbach and Nussbach were also connected to the EGT network. In order to meet the increased demand for electricity, EGT also bought electricity from the Laufenburg power plant on the Upper Rhine .

EGT during the world wars

Stress measurement around 1904

As a result of the First World War , EGT got into a tense financial situation. For this reason, in 1922 the cities of Triberg, St. Georgen, Furtwangen, Hornberg and the municipality of Schonach held 50% of the EGT's share capital. The other half of the capital remained in the hands of the founding families.

In addition to lighting, electricity has now been used to drive machines and devices - EGT benefited from this and adapted to the new dimensions of energy consumption. The golden twenties were followed by the global economic crisis . Like many other companies, it also hit the Triberg energy company hard, as commercial and industrial companies reduced their consumption to a minimum.

EGT employees at a fuse

Due to the stabilization of the economy in Germany, energy demand rose again. An even stronger demand was achieved during the Second World War . However, a lack of material made it difficult to expand the networks and enemy attacks damaged the EGT's facilities and facilities.

After the end of the Second World War, the population's energy consumption decreased due to a lack of building materials, but primarily due to the restrictions imposed by the occupying powers, so that EGT could hardly sell any electricity in 1946. The war and its consequences caused great financial losses for the Triberg energy company. It was not until the Federal Republic of Germany was founded that the company was rebuilt.

Economic miracle, oil crisis and natural gas

The upswing in the economy in the post-war years increased energy demand rapidly across Germany. The result was the expansion of numerous power plants and interconnected networks throughout Germany . EGT also adapted to this change with new regulating transformers and the reinforcement of lines.

In order to meet the high demand for electricity, EGT also concluded an external electricity supply contract with the Laufenburg power station in 1955 . For this purpose, substations as well as long-distance lines and transformer stations were set up in the region at great financial expense . In 1971, EGT employed a total of around 140 people.

Despite the end of the economic miracle and the oil crisis , the demand for electricity rose steadily in the 1970s, so that EGT also continued to expand the medium and low voltage networks. In 1983 EGT began supplying surrounding communities with natural gas and invested around 60 million D-Marks in the natural gas network. New tasks and an increased number of workers led to a new warehouse and administration building in Schonacher Strasse in Triberg in the early 1980s.

The headquarters of EGT

In 1991 EGT Elektrotechnik (from 2002 EGT Gebäudetechnik) was founded, which continued electrical installations as a separate company. Four years later, the company opened a service center in Freiburg. The management of the group also experienced a change. Rudolf Kastner joined the management in 1993. He succeeded Michael Weinmann, who had headed the company since 1971. Kastner is the eleventh managing director of EGT since it was founded almost 100 years ago and is still chairman of the board today.

The EGT today

In the course of the liberalization of the energy market, EGT Energiehandel was founded in 2001 and started selling electricity and gas throughout Germany. In 2012, the EGT group of companies had a total turnover of more than 600 million euros - four times as much as in 2007 and is now one of the 15 largest German energy sales companies (based on the amount of electricity and gas sold).
