Badenia (magazine)

Badenia or the Baden region and people is the title of a regional history magazine published in two episodes, 1839–1844 and 1859–1866.

Title page of the first year of Badenia (1839)

The periodical published by the Baden archivist at the Generallandesarchiv Karlsruhe, Josef Bader , was initially understood, as the subtitle of the first three volumes shows, as a journal for patriotic history and regional studies, with maps, lithographs and colored illustrations of national costumes. In terms of the program, the editor wanted to add a “ popular processing of the same” to the “series of learned products” on “local history and regional studies” .

According to the editor, the magazine, which was initially enumerated by year on the front page, was successful with this concept, as demonstrated by "an unusually strong decline and very encouraging applause among all classes of our population", but it had "occurred as a result of the 1845 period Miscarriages and political turmoil ”. Bader then referred to the two volumes Meine Fahrt und Wander im Heimatlande , which he published in the mid-1850s, as “a kind of continuation” , before he finally decided to take up the “original plan” of Badenia and continue the magazine. Nonetheless, the previous year census was not taken over, but started again in 1859 with the first volume of a “New Series” - although not mentioned as such on the title page; the subtitle has also now been changed to a magazine for the dissemination of the historical-topographical-statistical knowledge of the Grand Duchy . Regardless of this, Bader himself later emphasized the unity of the "founded in 1839 and, after a long interruption, relaunched in 1859" magazine. At the same point it was announced that Badenia had "passed over to the Association for Badische Ortbeschreibung as the organ for its publications" in May 1863 . Accordingly, after the external title there is another front page with Badenia in its previous form . Journal of the Association for Badische Ortbeschreibung. First volume.
