Elzwiesen is a nature reserve and landscape protection area in Baden-Württemberg . It is a cultural-historical document of an old form of management ( water meadows ) along the Elz as a breeding area for endangered bird species and a resting and feeding area for migrants .

The nature and landscape protection area is located in the Offenburg Rhine plain in the area of ​​the municipalities of Kenzingen , Rheinhausen and Rust in the district of Emmendingen and in the district of Ortenau in Baden-Württemberg.

Characteristics

The area was designated as a nature and landscape protection area by ordinance of the Freiburg Regional Council of November 6, 1990 . This ordinance was renewed on March 25, 2004, the ordinance of 1990 expired. The NSG is managed under the protected area number 3.174 at the regional council of Freiburg . It has an area of ​​410.8 hectares , of which 281.5 hectares fall in the Emmendingen district and 129.3 hectares in the Ortenau district. The nature reserve is classified in IUCN Category IV, a biotope and species protection area. The WDPA-ID is 162939 and corresponds to the European CDDA code and the EUNIS number. The area is also part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas with an area of ​​4,929.17 hectares.

The protection purpose of the nature reserve is

  1. "The preservation of a large meadow area in the Elz lowlands, with a near-natural river section of the Alte Elz in the southern area,
    • as a cultural and historical document of an old form of management (meadow irrigation) with original hydraulic structures;
    • as a habitat for several rare and endangered animal species, especially bird species that breed in the meadows.

Landscape protection area

In order to secure the nature reserve from impairment and to realize the protection purpose, a landscape protection area with a total size of around 327 hectares was set up in addition to the above-mentioned ordinance of the Freiburg Regional Council. The LSG is around 135 hectares (protected area number 3.17.020) in the Ortenau district and with around 192 hectares (protected area number 3.16.013) in the district of Emmendingen.
