Mittelgrund Helmlingen is a nature reserve in the nature area 210 Offenburg Rhine plain in Baden-Württemberg . In the area there are forests, bodies of water and riparian zones characteristic of the Rheinaue . It serves as a habitat for diverse animal and plant communities with rare and threatened species and is a natural part of the landscape with a special character and beauty.

geography

The nature reserve is located on the right bank of the Rhine in the Rheinau district of Helmlingen . A small part of the area is also in the district of Freistett and is separated by the Mühlbach . In the north, the nature reserve borders on the Helmlingen quarry pond. It covers 103 hectares of the Rhine floodplains of the Gewann Mittelgrund as well as the old Rhine Mittelkopf and Rubenkopfkehle .

Characteristics

The area was designated as a nature reserve by ordinance on May 24, 1995 by the Freiburg Regional Council and has an area of ​​103.0 hectares. It is listed under the protected area number 3.208 and is classified in IUCN Category IV, a biotope and species protection area. The WDPA ID is 164634 and corresponds to the European CDDA code and the EUNIS number.

Flora and fauna

The Mittelgrund Helmlingen nature reserve consists largely of a typical Rhine floodplain forest , which is interrupted in places by small Rhine floodplains and the somewhat larger old Rhine Mittelkopf and Rubenkopfkehle . The waters and riparian zones serve as a habitat for many different animal and plant species, including rare and threatened species. In the alluvial forest there are many species of birds such as the middle woodpecker , the oriole , the goshawk and other smaller songbird species, as well as the gray heron and the rare kingfisher can be found in the waters. In addition, other nesting birds such as the are on the waters in the reserve crested grebe , the little grebe , the coot , the mallard and tufted duck watching. In addition to the birds, smaller animals such as the common frog , the water frog , the yellow-bellied toad , various types of dragonflies and many more live here .

Planned development

A new quarry pond is being planned on the “Unterer Gayling” river bordering the Mittelgrund Helmlingen nature reserve, which is to be connected to the Helmlingen gravel works via a conveyor belt. This conveyor belt will then probably mostly run through the nature reserve, which is a reason for some residents to protest against the planned quarry pond.
