The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Margareta is a listed church building in Aiterhofen in the Straubing-Bogen district ( Bavaria ).

History and architecture

There is no reliable information about the construction data. By comparing styles, construction is assumed to have started in the first quarter of the 13th century. The three-aisled basilica is an important example of Romanesque architecture that has been modified over the centuries. The building was oversized for a village church at that time and the furnishings were too high-quality. In the 18th century the church was redesigned in Baroque style, and the windows were enlarged at this time. Only the window in the apse remained in its original size. During the renovation in 1913, the furnishings and the painting were revised. Extensive measures were taken between 1990 and 1995 to preserve the substance of the building.

The exterior has essentially retained its appearance from the late Romanesque period. The architecture looks heavy, structures and jewelry were only used very sparingly. The tower on the north side has five storeys and the tower on the south side is about as high as the aisle. The limestone blocks of the nave are precisely set. The choir area is lower than the nave, the apse with the conical roof is slightly drawn in. The aisles are just closing.

The plastered walls inside are painted white, the painted architectural elements stand out clearly.

Furnishing

  • Altars and figures in the baroque style were purchased in the 18th century.
  • On the choir arch there are depictions of angels floating around the crucifix.
  • The high altar is in red and black in focus and as wide as the chancel. St. Margaret can be seen on the altar painting. She is sitting on a kite. Above the cafeteria there are sculptures of the apostles Peter and Paul in white and gold.
  • The left side altar dates from the Baroque period.
  • On the right side altar are the figures of Joseph and Anna , behind whom their daughter Maria stands. Maria is taught by Anna.
  • The altar painting on the right side altar is a work by Christian Wink . It shows the homage to the baby Jesus through the continents.
  • The polygonal pulpit stands on a pillar on the south side of the nave. The sound cover is made in the neo-Romanesque style. The pulpit stands on a pillar and is accessible via a staircase.
  • The organ building company Anton Ehrlich built an organ with one manual and eight registers in 1874 . A new instrument with 18 registers was built into the unchanged case in 1981, and a reed register was added in 1995 .
